What do we know about the history of the plane and the crash?

Accident Report

These history cards show that this Corsair was assigned to VMF-124 at MCAS Mojave, California while training for it's second combat deployment.  This was from February through August of 1944.  In August, the aircraft was reassigned to Cherry Point, MCAS, North Carolina.  Elsewhere in this site, we have photos of Lt. John Wastvedt reunited with this aircraft that he flew six times at Mojave.  Remnants of the large unit number L69 were still visible on the side of the fuselage near the cockpit.  We have no idea what additional numbers or paint changes were made over this while at Cherry Point.  As you can see, from the photos in the swamp, most of the original paint had faded so badly that only the lower areas were still visible and the earliest paint was all that remained.

Sadly, Lt. Pennington perished in this accident.  We know nothing about this man, at this time.
